{"id":102,"date":"2008-08-05T06:53:30","date_gmt":"2008-08-05T14:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=102"},"modified":"2024-07-18T00:46:06","modified_gmt":"2024-07-18T04:46:06","slug":"drawing-revisions-and-pdmworks-part-1-letter-revision-identifiers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=102","title":{"rendered":"Drawing Revisions and PDMWorks (Part 1: Letter Revision Identifiers)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whether using actual drawings or relying on the model, and whether using a highly controlled documentation system or nearly completely uncontrolled, one will find revisions are necessary.\u00a0\u00a0 It is important to use them consistently.\u00a0 It is important to make sure each time another person sees a drawing or model, they understand which revision is in front of them.\u00a0 It is important not to reuse revisions. If there is a working copy that is incomplete, preliminary or draft, then stating such directly on the document is very important.<\/p>\n<p>Also important is avoiding interpretation confusion.\u00a0 If using letters to represent revision iterations, avoid using letters that resemble numbers or that can have alternative meanings.\u00a0 ASME Y14.35M-1997 states that I, O, Q, S, X and Z should not be used as revision letters.\u00a0 In fact, other ASME engineering drawing standards also forbid the use of these letters for other purposes as well.\u00a0 The reason is that I, O, Q, S, and Z all can be misinterpreted as numbers 1, 0, 5 and 2.\u00a0 When X is used, it looks like a field that requires further input.<\/p>\n<p>These rules where written before the <a title=\"The wiki article on this subject currently sucks, so here is a search of books that may generally cover this topic.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%2Fqid%3D1218059843%3Fie%3DUTF8%26rs%3D1000%26keywords%3Dinformation%2520age%26bbn%3D53%26rnid%3D1000%26rh%3Di%253Aaps%252Ck%253Ainformation%2520age%252Ci%253Astripbooks%252Cn%253A53&amp;tag=itstro-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Information Age<\/a> <sup>(<a title=\"This wiki article on this subject currently sucks.\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Information_Age\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wiki<\/a>)<\/sup> and our reliance on computer databases, back when documentation relied on handwriting.\u00a0 However, these rules are just as important in our current age as they have ever been before.\u00a0 Many different types of computer fonts exist.\u00a0 What looks like a 1 in one font will look like an I in another.\u00a0 Even with my 20\/20 vision, I will confuse S&#8217;s with 5&#8217;s in small sizes in certain common fonts.\u00a0 Also, transcription errors still enter the picture, as a human who does not have direct access to the electronic database is usually involved at some point.<\/p>\n<p>PDMWorks (soon to be renamed to SolidWorks Workgroup PDM by SolidWorks Corp) automatically assigns revisions to documents when they are checked-in.\u00a0 There are options for the PDMWorks Administrator to use dumb ranges, or to establish a list of revision identifiers from which to pull.\u00a0 Unfortunately, when using letters, PDMWorks does not automatically disregard the taboo letters.\u00a0 So, I&#8217;ve made an Excel file with a list of allowed revision letters.\u00a0 It can be copy-and-pasted directly into PDMWorks VaultAdmin&#8217;s Revision Scheme Listing fields.\u00a0 It is available here: <a title=\"Allowed Revision List based on ASME\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=6247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Allowed Revision List<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Part 2 of this article series will address using PDMWorks ability to automatically revise drawings upon check-in.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whether using actual drawings or relying on the model, and whether using a highly controlled documentation system or nearly completely uncontrolled, one will find revisions are necessary.\u00a0\u00a0 It is important to use them consistently.\u00a0 It is important to make sure each time another person sees a drawing or model, they understand which revision is in &hellip;
