{"id":132,"date":"2008-11-26T05:38:00","date_gmt":"2008-11-26T13:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=132"},"modified":"2011-07-18T16:52:03","modified_gmt":"2011-07-19T00:52:03","slug":"foreshortened-diameter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=132","title":{"rendered":"Foreshortened Diameter Dimension"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Foreshortened linear diameter dimensions are not specifically supported by ASME Y14.5M-1994.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know if &#8220;ASME Y14.5M-2009&#8221; will have such support added.\u00a0 Even if not, there is a common practice of showing foreshortened diameters.\u00a0 SolidWorks supports the two most common delineations for these.<\/p>\n<p>To have a foreshortened diameter dimension, the diameter being dimensioned will have to be cut off in the view.\u00a0 This means effective use of these is pretty much limited to detail views, since this is likely to be the only place one would normally use such dimensions.\u00a0 I may try to experiment in the future to see just how far I can stretch SolidWorks functionality in this area, but for this article, I&#8217;m going to stick to the basics.\u00a0 Please note that these instructions are SolidWorks 2009 based.\u00a0 Steps will be similar in older versions, but may not be exactly the same.\u00a0 They will be close enough to make this a good guide, though.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preparation <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To employ a foreshortened diameter dimension, there is some preparation needed within the model.\u00a0 You cannot just insert your model into a drawing and add a <em>non imported dimension<\/em> onto a circular feature.\u00a0 Because of the way Hole Wizard functions, foreshortening will also not work for holes created with it. Why?\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure as to the reasoning.\u00a0 I just know SolidWorks only enables this function for <em>imported dimensions<\/em> (dimensions inserted from model).<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start a sketch in your model.\u00a0 This sketch will become your feature.<\/li>\n<li>Draw a circle.<\/li>\n<li>Dimension that circle as a linear diameter dimension.\u00a0 This will not work if the dimension is radial.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure this dimension is set as <em>mark for drawing<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Create a feature from the sketch.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>On the drawing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Insert the model onto a drawing.\u00a0 Create a detail view which cuts across a circular feature.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fcsuper.com\/images\/Blog\/part333%20-%20Sheet2.jpg?resize=384%2C298\" border=\"2\" alt=\"Cutting the Detail View\" hspace=\"2\" vspace=\"2\" width=\"384\" height=\"298\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fcsuper.com\/images\/Blog\/part333%20-%20Sheet44.jpg?resize=384%2C296\" border=\"2\" alt=\"Detail A\" hspace=\"2\" vspace=\"2\" width=\"384\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the drawing is set up, here are the steps.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If the center of the circle appears in the detail, select the detail view by LMB clicking it.\u00a0 If the center does not appear in the detail, then select the parent view instead.<\/li>\n<li>Insert model items.\u00a0 This can be done by Insert pulldown&gt;Model Items.\u00a0 One of the dimensions to appear will be the diameter of the circular feature.<\/li>\n<li>Click OK in the PropertiesManager Pane to accept and close Model Items panel.\u00a0 If already in the detail view, you are done.\u00a0 The dimension will appear as a foreshortened linear diameter dimension.\u00a0 However, if working in the parent view, a few more steps are required to get the desired effect.<\/li>\n<li>Hold down the SHIFT key.\u00a0 Select the diameter dimension by clicking and hold the LMB over it.<\/li>\n<li>Drag the dimension in the detail view.\u00a0 Let go of the LMB and SHIFT key.\u00a0 This will copy your dimension into the detail view. The dimension will appear as a foreshortened linear diameter dimension.<\/li>\n<li>Delete the dimension from the parent view.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s next?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SolidWorks is very particular about how it allows foreshortened linear diameter dimensions.\u00a0 These steps must be followed exactly in the manner described here.\u00a0 I wish SolidWorks made it easy to implement foreshortened diameter dimensions, including allowing them for <em>non inserted dimensions<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Future articles on this topic will discuss styles of foreshortened delineation (how to get double arrows instead of the zigzag dimension line).\u00c2\u00a0 It will also discuss one work around so foreshortening can be applied to other types of linear dimensions, producing a result sometimes called clipped dimensions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Foreshortened linear diameter dimensions are not specifically supported by ASME Y14.5M-1994.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know if &#8220;ASME Y14.5M-2009&#8221; will have such support added.\u00a0 Even if not, there is a common practice of showing foreshortened diameters.\u00a0 SolidWorks supports the two most common delineations for these.
