{"id":136,"date":"2008-12-08T05:37:34","date_gmt":"2008-12-08T13:37:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=136"},"modified":"2008-11-23T14:55:50","modified_gmt":"2008-11-23T22:55:50","slug":"foreshortened-linear-dimensions-clipped-dimensions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=136","title":{"rendered":"Foreshortened Linear Dimensions (Clipped Dimensions)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As mentioned in another article in this series, SolidWorks does not support the foreshortening of linear dimensions, except in views where both ends are visible in the view, such as break views.\u00c2\u00a0 Also mentioned was that foreshortening of linear dimensions doesn&#8217;t make much sense in most circumstances because both ends of dimension must be in view for a drawing&#8217;s reader to understand the callout.\u00c2\u00a0 As such, they are not supported by the ASME standard.\u00c2\u00a0 Even still, there may be some cases where it is necessary or desired to clip a dimension within detail or partial section views.<\/p>\n<p>There is one potential workaround to allow this in SolidWorks, using a series of double arrow symbols created by Jeff Hamilton.\u00c2\u00a0 Jeff&#8217;s creation requires a modification to your gtol.sym file.\u00c2\u00a0 Unfortunately, to implement this change, you&#8217;ll either need to be a one man show or a CAD Administrator who has time to update everyone&#8217;s computers with the edited gtol.sym file.\u00c2\u00a0 This is because any symbols within a drawing reside in the gtol.sym file, and that file is specific to each and every install of SolidWorks.\u00c2\u00a0 Another drawback is that the user must visually and manually align the double arrows into the appropriate position.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fcsuper.com\/images\/Blog\/doublearrow.jpg?resize=384%2C285\" alt=\"Selection of double arrows\" vspace=\"2\" width=\"384\" border=\"2\" height=\"285\" hspace=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Barring these drawbacks, this is a pretty good solution for those who really need this function.\u00c2\u00a0 The file can be downloaded at this location:\u00c2\u00a0 <span class=\"pn-title\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sw.fcsuper.com\/index.php?name=UpDownload&amp;req=viewdownloaddetails&amp;lid=116\" title=\"Gtol modification with double arrows\" target=\"_blank\">Geometric Tolerancing Symbols Library Foreshorten Arrows Add-on<\/a><\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Instructions on how to edit the gtol.sym file and use the new symbols are included in the download.\u00c2\u00a0 Have fun!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As mentioned in another article in this series, SolidWorks does not support the foreshortening of linear dimensions, except in views where both ends are visible in the view, such as break views.\u00c2\u00a0 Also mentioned was that foreshortening of linear dimensions doesn&#8217;t make much sense in most circumstances because both ends of dimension must be in &hellip;
