{"id":154,"date":"2009-02-08T12:46:03","date_gmt":"2009-02-08T20:46:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=154"},"modified":"2009-02-08T12:22:16","modified_gmt":"2009-02-08T20:22:16","slug":"sww09-cad-management-bootcamp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=154","title":{"rendered":"SWW09:  CAD Management Bootcamp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At four hours, Greg Jonkowski&#8217;s CAD Management Bootcamp is a major presentation that is too large (long) to fit into the regular SolidWorks World days.\u00c2\u00a0 It is full of information about computers (server and workstation), data security and safety, graphics cards, OS&#8217;s, and what some would consider controversial advice.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Greg discussed the benefits of properly managing the workplace CAD environment.\u00c2\u00a0 When it comes to establishing or improving the CAD environment, he suggests it is good to always critical.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is always room for improvement.\u00c2\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Focus on allowing engineering to actually engineer.\u00c2\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Simplify processes to improve efficiency.\u00c2\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>If some &#8220;improvement&#8221; makes the task harder, the project will fail.\u00c2\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>He also suggests that CAD management means that stakeholders are involve in the processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At most organizations, there is usually one or two SolidWorks power users.\u00c2\u00a0 Greg\u00c2\u00a0makes it clear that these individuals should be recognized and utilitized for there skill set.\u00c2\u00a0 These individuals can also be leveraged to implement mentoring programs to help others\u00c2\u00a0become stronger SolidWorks users.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many other points were comprehensivesy covered to provide a good level of detail regarding issues that a CAD Manager may encounter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Urban legends&#8221;<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He covered many topics.\u00c2\u00a0 However, of note is his two more controversial recommendations regarding computers and installation.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He made it clear that anti-virus software should be used and that it should not be deactivated when installing SolidWorks or its add-ons.\u00c2\u00a0 I know many sources contradict this.\u00c2\u00a0 However, this appears to be the company-line from SolidWorks Corp now.\u00c2\u00a0 It should be noted that he made this statement very clearly and authoritatively, yet caveatted his comments with unelaborated &#8220;I don&#8217;t knows&#8221; and &#8220;problem with one anti-virus&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 I found this to be frustrating.<\/p>\n<p>The other comment that might turn some heads is his stern statement to not use the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=50\" title=\"\/3GB Switch\">\/3GB switch <\/a>to give applications access to more of the computer&#8217;s RAM.\u00c2\u00a0 There are risks associated with using the \/3GB switch.\u00c2\u00a0 As he puts it, using this switch is &#8220;robbing Peter to pay Paul&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Instead of using this switch, Greg recommends simply upgrading to Vista and 64-bit computer systems.\u00c2\u00a0 I say &#8220;simply&#8221;
