{"id":1656,"date":"2010-09-03T05:27:52","date_gmt":"2010-09-03T13:27:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=1656"},"modified":"2010-09-02T21:10:20","modified_gmt":"2010-09-03T05:10:20","slug":"draftsight-news-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=1656","title":{"rendered":"Draftsight news (Part 1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.3ds.com\/products\/draftsight\/draftsight-overview\/#vid1\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1657\" style=\"margin: 1px 3px;\" title=\"Draftsight logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/draftsightlogo.jpg?resize=300%2C93\" alt=\"Draftsight logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"93\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/draftsightlogo.jpg?resize=300%2C93 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/draftsightlogo.jpg?w=303 303w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Not that long ago, a new free .dwg 2D editor was public beta released by Dassault Systemes called Draftsight (<a title=\"Draftsight download from Dassault Systemes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.3ds.com\/products\/draftsight\/draftsight-overview\/#vid1\" target=\"_blank\">download it for free here<\/a>).\u00a0 The fact that this application is free signals a shift in the 2D CAD industry.<\/p>\n<p>According to Fielder Hiss of SolidWorks Corp (a Dassault Systemes subsidiarity), many customers still have the need for 2D.\u00a0 He stated that the free Draftsight application will allow these customers to free up investments for 3D.\u00a0 He also commented that 70% of Draftsight downloaders told others about it and &#8220;90% loved it.&#8221;\u00a0 With 45,000 installs to-date (mostly during the traditionally slow month of August), the adoption rate is impressive.<\/p>\n<h3>Online community<\/h3>\n<p>Adjoined to Draftsight is a growing online community that will participate in the application&#8217;s use, development and support.\u00a0 The users are given direct input via another technology announced by Dassault Systemes also announced in June 2010, called <a title=\"See What You Mean from Dassault Systemes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.3ds.com\/company\/about-dassault-systemes\/see-what-you-mean#vid1\" target=\"_blank\">SwYm <\/a>(<strong>S<\/strong>ee <strong>W<\/strong>hat <strong>Y<\/strong>ou <strong>M<\/strong>ean).\u00a0 SwYm allows Dassault Systemes to establish a strong online community backbone for Draftsight users.<\/p>\n<h3>How will Draftsight generate income?<\/h3>\n<p>Though it is free, DraftSight is not offered as open source.\u00a0 Nor is it offered under a true <a title=\"Wikipedia.org article\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Freemium\" target=\"_blank\">freemium <\/a>marketing  model.\u00a0 Dassault Systemes is taking a different path.<\/p>\n<p>Funding for the development of DraftSight will come in the form of paid  add-ons and services.\u00a0 A yearly maintenance fee covers the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>direct telephone or online technical support<\/li>\n<li>Floating network licenses<\/li>\n<li>API extension (including LISP)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even though Draftsight is still in public beta release, Dassault Systemes reports that some customers have already purchased the additional services.<\/p>\n<h3>LISP<\/h3>\n<p>According to Arron Kelly of Dassault Systems, hundreds of &#8220;AutoLISP&#8221; functions are already available in Draftsight&#8217;s own supported LISP.\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s not a 1 for 1&#8221;, he states.\u00a0 He makes clear that the list of LISP functions will grow based on community input.<\/p>\n<p>I personally would like to see some fundamental LISP functions supported without a service fee.\u00a0 Even some standard functions in AutoCAD started out as customer generated LISP routines.\u00a0 Not providing some portion of Draftsight&#8217;s LISP for free may hinder development of Draftsight itself.<\/p>\n<h3>Possible impact on 2D CAD industry<\/h3>\n<p>Draftsight seems to hit the 2D CAD industry hard.\u00a0 Offering a free alternative to over-priced 2D CAD competitors might be one of the smartest things that Dassualt Systemes does in 2010.\u00a0 Hopefully this time next year, Dassault Systemes will be able to brag about a massive rate of users who convert to Draftsight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not that long ago, a new free .dwg 2D editor was public beta released by Dassault Systemes called Draftsight (download it for free here).\u00a0 The fact that this application is free signals a shift in the 2D CAD industry.
