One realm they seem to haunt is that of repetitive features, also known as patterns.&nbsp; Many attempts to shorthand pattern callouts are continuously made.&nbsp; Bad habits die hard as old mistakes are passed down from one generation of engineers to the next.&nbsp; One particularly bad habit is the use of linear dimensions with the term &#8220;NON-ACCUMULATIVE TOLERANCES&#8221;, or something similar.&nbsp; There is no such thing.&nbsp; Trying to use this shorthand leads to tolerance issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/PatternDim1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2433\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" title=\"Pattern non-accumulative tolerance callout\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/PatternDim1.jpg?resize=600%2C192\" alt=\"Pattern non-accumulative tolerance callout\" width=\"600\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/PatternDim1.jpg?w=800 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/PatternDim1.jpg?resize=300%2C96 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the example above,&nbsp;the dimensional callout&nbsp;attempts to simply dimension a pattern without considering tolerance stack-up.&nbsp; However, this attempt fails since&nbsp;any two non-adjecent holes cannot&nbsp;avoid accumulation of tolerance due to the dimensioning scheme.&nbsp; Tolerance stack-ups on linear dimensions&nbsp;have accumulation.&nbsp; There&#8217;s no way to avoid it without&nbsp;dumping linear dimensions.<\/p>\n<p>I had originally planned on a short article about this topic.&nbsp; However, once I started delving into it, I found out that there is a lot of ground to cover.&nbsp;&nbsp;
