There were particular questions posed regarding the long term outlook for Enterprise PDM.\u00a0 The concern is that Dassault Systemes&#8217; plan for PDM solutions may be different than SolidWorks Corp.\u00a0 If that is the case, the Enterprise PDM may not be viable long term solution.<\/p>\n<p>My worries where not allayed in a recent presentation by\u00a0Noam Ktalav of Dassault Systemes (DS). \u00a0He was\u00a0asked about where Enterprise PDM fits into the DS product offerings.\u00a0 His answer\u00a0didn&#8217;t fully address the question.\u00a0 Instead, he talked about Enovia and its scalability.\u00a0 Needless to say, official word regarding Enterprise PDM from DS is very mixed.<\/p>\n<h3>Jeff Ray offers insight on this topic<\/h3>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.solidworks.com\/solidworksworld08podcasts\/images\/2007\/12\/03\/jeffcasual.jpg?resize=100%2C147\" border=\"2\" alt=\"Jeff Ray\" hspace=\"2\" vspace=\"2\" width=\"100\" height=\"147\" align=\"right\" \/>This prompted me to contact SolidWorks Corp for a clearer picture, as least from their perspective.\u00a0 Jeff Ray, CEO of SolidWorks Corp, was able to provide some interesting insights.\u00a0 He exclaimed that statements from DS about Enterprise PDM are mixed.\u00a0 Ray did offer hope\u00a0that something is being done about this.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[There is a] very intensive effort between SolidWorks and Enovia for a clear road map.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>SolidWorks Corp is working hard to lay out a clear plan for its customers.\u00a0Ray\u00a0discussed the need for a long term strategy.\u00a0 SolidWorks Corp\u00a0does not want to force a decision on customers that may eventually lead to a dead end.\u00a0 This would bad for SolidWorks Corp, bad for reputation of individuals who relied on the solutions offered by SolidWorks Corp, and bad for the companies that implemented those solutions.\u00a0 Instead, Ray declared,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We need to give people a scalable answer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ray then stated that he wants to optimize the user experience and &#8220;hide the plumbing&#8221; of the software.\u00a0 He doesn&#8217;t want to let technology get in the way of the user experience.\u00a0 He elaborated that users shouldn&#8217;t have to be IT experts or even require extensive reliance upon IT departments just to manage their data.<\/p>\n<p>So, a solution that will address Enterprise PDM&#8217;s place in the DS universe is coming. \u00a0As to the when and in what form?\u00a0 Answers will be forthcoming soon.<\/p>\n<h3>And what of SolidWorks Workgroups PDM?<\/h3>\n<p>During my interview with Ray, I also asked about SolidWorks Workgroups PDM (aka PDMWorks).\u00a0 He clarified that development of the application has hit the limits of the technology behind it.\u00a0 It is not worth the effort to continue to extensively develop the application further.\u00a0 He stated that SolidWorks Corp will continue to support Workgroups PDM and any customers that choose to use it, but\u00a0that the limitations of the application need to be clearly explained.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a\u00a0recent article, I expressed concerns about the current state of PDM, especially for SolidWorks.
