The much anticipated initial release of\u00a0eDrawings for iPad<\/em> is now available from the Apple App Store<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0This is an inexpensive app ($1.99)\u00a0to view SolidWorks models<\/strong> (.sldprt), assemblies<\/strong> (.sldasm) and drawings<\/strong> (.slddrw)\u00a0on the iPad<\/strong>.\u00a0 Of course, eDrawing formats<\/strong> (.edrw, .eprt, .easm) and .DWG\u00a0<\/strong>are also supported.\u00a0 All images in this article are actual screen shots.<\/p>\n

Overview<\/h4>\n

The official name of the new app is eDrawings for iPad from 3DS SolidWorks<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0This initial release is a great app with a lot of potential.\u00a0 For the first time, you can inexpensively open and view native SolidWorks files directly on a mobile device<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The app provides many of the familiar and fun functions from the eDrawings family.\u00a0 It is useful to quickly and conveniently communicate 3D CAD files to locations and environments were PCs and printed drawings just aren’t practical.\u00a0 It also provides an great method to view SolidWorks files for customers that do not use SolidWorks, from the shop floor to a corporation’s CEO.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

User Experience<\/h4>\n

When the app is started, you are presented with a menu of models and drawings.\u00a0 There is an area of sample models and an area for your files, called “User Files”.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The sample files provide good cases to try out eDrawings for iPad functionality.\u00a0 The User Files area lists any files which you have added to the iPad to view in eDrawings.<\/p>\n

When you open a supported 3D file, you can rotate<\/strong>, pan<\/strong>, zoom in<\/strong> and out<\/strong>, zoom fit<\/strong>, zoom home<\/strong> (last view when file that was saved).\u00a0 Similar to other eDrawings applications, the eDrawings for iPad app can Play<\/strong> a model by\u00a0transitioning between different views of the model.<\/p>\n

Assemblies<\/h4>\n

For assemblies, you can highlight individual parts<\/strong> from the Components tree.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Configurations<\/strong> are also supported. Selecting a particular configuration from the Configuration tree will immediately display it within the graphics area.\u00a0 It is very easy to switch between configurations.<\/p>\n

Assembly explosions<\/strong> are viewable from the Explode Assembly button.\u00a0 Individual configurations can also be separately exploded.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Highlighting parts from the Components\u00a0tree is also available when viewing the assembly as an explosion.\u00a0 This makes it very easy to identify parts in the graphics area when browsing through an assembly.<\/p>\n

Just as with the desktop computer, larger files consume more device resources.\u00a0 If you wish to view a\u00a0large assembly, you may wish to close background processes if your iPad resources are stretched thin.<\/p>\n

Parts<\/h4>\n

Zooming methods are the same as assemblies, with zoom fit<\/strong>, zoom home<\/strong>, panning<\/strong>, etc.\u00a0 Play<\/strong> is also available.\u00a0 I don’t know what it is about Play; there is just some inexplicable joy that comes from watching a model transition between views.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Configurations are also\u00a0supported for parts.\u00a0 Switching between configurations is a breeze.<\/p>\n

Same as other eDrawings releases, DimXpert<\/strong> dimensions are viewable in eDrawing part (.eprt) files.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Drawings<\/h4>\n

Zoom tools work a little different for drawing.\u00a0 There is still pan<\/strong>, zoom in<\/strong> and out<\/strong>, zoom fit<\/strong>, and zoom home<\/strong>.\u00a0 Logically, you won’t have the ability to rotate a drawing sheet into 3D space.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

When viewing a drawing, Play<\/strong> works the same in eDrawings for iPad as it does in other versions of eDrawings.\u00a0 Watching a drawing transition between drawing views is even more enjoyable than watching a\u00a0model because the associated dimensions are displayed at each waypoint.<\/p>\n

Drawing sheets<\/strong> are also supported.\u00a0 Switching between drawing sheets may be done through the Sheets tree.<\/p>\n

Usability and Performance<\/h4>\n

eDrawings for iPad is very intuitive for anyone familiar with multitouch screens.\u00a0 One finger drag rotates the model.\u00a0 Two fingers pan.\u00a0 Pinching zooms.\u00a0 I’ve used this app on both an iPad and iPad 3.\u00a0 On either of these devices,\u00a0manipulating the model orientation has great responsiveness that\u00a0is as immediate as you may expect any iPad app to be.\u00a0 For example, switching between configurations and\u00a0sheets using the\u00a0tree\u00a0is very quick.<\/p>\n

Loading a file into eDrawings for iPad is also a snap.\u00a0 You can copy files to your\u00a0iPad\u00a0via your iTunes interface.\u00a0 Even easier, just email the file to yourself or someone else who has this app installed.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

When downloading the model file through your email interface, you are automatically presented with the option to open it in eDrawings.\u00a0 If you accept, it is added to your User Files and opened.\u00a0 Very convenient.<\/p>\n

Bottomline<\/h4>\n

eDrawings for iPad has enough\u00a0functions\u00a0to immediately make this a useful tool.\u00a0 It is very inexpensive when compared to similar applications that view native SolidWorks files on the iPad.\u00a0 The app is very easy to use.\u00a0\u00a0These\u00a0points give this\u00a0app a \u00a0great combination of qualities.<\/p>\n
