{"id":34,"date":"2008-03-04T05:54:19","date_gmt":"2008-03-04T12:54:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=34"},"modified":"2008-03-06T21:19:13","modified_gmt":"2008-03-07T04:19:13","slug":"solidworks-world-2008-day-3-jan-23-breakout-sessions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=34","title":{"rendered":"SolidWorks World 2008 Day 3 (Jan 23) Breakout sessions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My first breakout session of the day was <strong>SolidWorks Sheet metal: Why do I do it like this or that?<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 This session went into a lot of detail about sheet metal functions in SolidWorks.\u00c2\u00a0 There was discussion covering tears, closed corners, dimensioning preferences, K-factors, when to use normal cut, and the fact that all thicknesses on a sheet metal part need to be identical.\u00c2\u00a0 One good point was that closed corners work only when the flanges have the same parent feature.\u00c2\u00a0 Like all good sheet metal presentations, miter flanges where also discussed.\u00c2\u00a0 One problem I had with the presentation is that way too much time was spent on discussing creation of\u00c2\u00a0flat patterns.\u00c2\u00a0 When several\u00c2\u00a0attendees confronted the presenter with\u00c2\u00a0the fact that\u00c2\u00a0flat patterns are not often necessary\u00c2\u00a0for a designer to create,\u00c2\u00a0he\u00c2\u00a0argued the point without really understanding why the attendees contested it.\u00c2\u00a0 According to ASME Y14.5M-1994, the drawing represents the final product.\u00c2\u00a0 Adding intermediate steps (such as flat patterns) are unnecessary since the vendor is responsible for the final product represented on the drawing.\u00c2\u00a0 Besides that, most sheet metal shops are much better at determining K-factors and knowing their shop&#8217;s limitations than most designers.\u00c2\u00a0 I think more information could be packed into the presentation if less time is spent on flat patterning.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch, I attended <strong>Leveraging the Design Tables and Configurations&#8230;<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Many points where covered.\u00c2\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a few.\u00c2\u00a0 It is important to establish a good naming convention for configurations.\u00c2\u00a0 Effort must be taken to determine how the model will be represented (drawing, BOM, literature, etc).\u00c2\u00a0 Utilize folders in the Model Assembly.\u00c2\u00a0 Utilize formulae in the Design Table instead of equations area.\u00c2\u00a0 One good point was the suggestion to save backup copies of design tables outside of SolidWorks\u00c2\u00a0in Excel itself.<\/p>\n<p>My final Breakout session of SolidWorks World 2008 was <strong>Demystifying PDMWorks Workgroup Triggers<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Although I&#8217;m not familiar with PDMWorks API, I did learn something about what is possible in PDMWorks.\u00c2\u00a0 Also, I learned about the setup required to utilize the triggers.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t take many basic how-to Breakout sessions this year.\u00c2\u00a0 My main focus was on developing my skills in configuration, customization, more\u00c2\u00a0detailed how-to&#8217;s,\u00c2\u00a0and set up.\u00c2\u00a0 I made sure I attended several API related sessions.\u00c2\u00a0 Overall, I feel the experience was something that I would not want to miss.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m glad I had the opportunity be involved in this experience.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My first breakout session of the day was SolidWorks Sheet metal: Why do I do it like this or that?.\u00c2\u00a0 This session went into a lot of detail about sheet metal functions in SolidWorks.\u00c2\u00a0 There was discussion covering tears, closed corners, dimensioning preferences, K-factors, when to use normal cut, and the fact that all thicknesses &hellip;
