\"SolidWorksIt’s been a long time since things have worked\u00a0the way I want on SolidWorks Legion website. \u00a0This blog was started back in 2007 as a follow-on to my SolidWorks resource website. \u00a0 SolidWorks Legion\u00a0is now many\u00a0times more popular than that original site. \u00a0When I first started this blog, I loaded it up with as many bells and whistles as I could find from WordPress. \u00a0The blog was loaded pretty heavy with plugins<\/a>. \u00a0Despite using WordPress <\/a>at its limits, SolidWorks Legion worked well enough for a long time, with a lot of cool features via the plugins.<\/p>\n

This all came to a crashing halt\u00a0when my article about Linux support for Draftsight<\/a> went viral in March 2011. \u00a0With 10’s of thousands of\u00a0hits in an extremely short period, SolidWorks Legion was literally\u00a0slashdotted<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(a.k.a, hug of death<\/em>) from\u00a0Slashdot <\/a>and other sites by very happy\u00a0Linux fans wanting a free or cheap professional 2D CAD application<\/a>. \u00a0SolidWorks Legion was up and down and up repeatedly for several days. \u00a0Up to that point, SolidWorks Legion was running about 400 unique hits a day. \u00a0Nothing has been the same since. \u00a0After the traffic settled back down, site traffic averaged 600 hits per day.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, that pushed the site\u00a0up over the capacity allowed by\u00a0my shared server. \u00a0I had to move SolidWorks Legion to what’s known as a Virtual Private Server<\/a>. \u00a0 Since traffic seemed to be steady, I didn’t mind\u00a0paying the extra. \u00a0The problem is that SolidWorks Legion\u00a0never really recovered from being slashdotted. \u00a0I had to scale back features, remove this and that elements, and tinker with settings just to get things to the point where I wasn’t constantly monitoring the site.<\/p>\n

To add insult to injury, since\u00a0that\u00a0time, Google changed its search result algorithm to reduce the importance of blogs. \u00a0Over night, my unique hits dropped from an average of 600 to 200 per day. \u00a0It’s been a painful few years of website management. \u00a0 On top of it all, I was hired on the\u00a0Product Definition team by DS SolidWorks Corp<\/a> later in 2011, so my available time for the site has been more constrained that ever. \u00a0This blog\u00a0has been limping along for awhile now. \u00a0Each new release of WordPress seemed to slow things down even more, even with the use of site caching.<\/p>\n

Well, I have some good news. \u00a0Thanks for a couple of friends (Dan Herzberg<\/a> and Charles Culp<\/a>) recently, I discovered new ways to get the website humming again (I hope). \u00a0First thing I was able to do it get notifications working again with IFTTT.com<\/a>. \u00a0Using this site helps take pressure off my site by removing the need\u00a0for various questionable social media publishing\u00a0plugins. \u00a0SolidWorks Legion is now publishing automatically to Twitter (@swsuper<\/a>), SolidWorks Legion page on Facebook<\/a>, and several other outlets. \u00a0The one annoying hole has been Google+. \u00a0 Jetpack <\/a>WordPress plugin has solved this problem; and a whole lot more. \u00a0Jetpack brings a lot of functionality to self-hosted WordPress sites. \u00a0Much of this functionality was earlier only available via a myriad of poorly written plugins. \u00a0Jetpack appears to be a well constructed plugin that allows SolidWorks Legion to have all of its old bells and whistles again, plus a lot more (stuff I’ve wanted to add for a long time). \u00a0In addition, I’ve dropped caching, as that seemed to make things worse in the long run.<\/p>\n

Let’s see how things go. \u00a0I’m hopeful that my old site is not just\u00a0back to its old self, but\u00a0better than ever! \u00a0Let me know what you think! \u00a0Has \u00a0SolidWorks Legion been better behaved over the past week?<\/p>\n
