{"id":539,"date":"2009-12-01T05:16:26","date_gmt":"2009-12-01T13:16:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=539"},"modified":"2009-11-27T07:47:40","modified_gmt":"2009-11-27T15:47:40","slug":"solidworks-is-easy-to-learn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=539","title":{"rendered":"SolidWorks is easy to learn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Based on my recent unscientific research, SolidWorks seems like it is an easy application to learn.\u00a0 In one poll, I asked for preference of educational choices for new employees not familiar with SolidWorks.\u00a0 A second poll asked how current users actually learned SolidWorks.\u00a0 The results are a little surprizing.<\/p>\n<p>Of the respondents to the <a title=\"How would you teach SolidWorks to new employees?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=395\" target=\"_blank\">first poll<\/a>, just slightly over 50% said they would teach SolidWorks to new employees on the job by mentoring them.\u00a0 Just under 50% said they would send their employee to VAR classes.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a title=\"How did you learn SolidWorks?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=406\" target=\"_blank\">second poll<\/a>, the overwhelming majority stated that they are self-taught in the use of SolidWorks.\u00a0 Some questions comes to mind.\u00a0 If SolidWorks is so easy to learn, do the VAR classes serve any purpose?\u00a0 Or, is it that the VAR classes are so ineffective that one is forced to learn on their own?<\/p>\n<p>My own experience in sending new employees to VAR taught introductory SolidWorks classes have yielded mixed results.\u00a0 They do not seem effective in many cases.\u00a0 In fact, the VAR classes actually seem to be turning off some individuals to the use of SolidWorks.\u00a0 It may be that there is just too much information crammed into the short 3 to 5 day courses.<\/p>\n<p>SolidWorks is easy enough to learn without classes.\u00a0 Classes should simply be used to provide a head start.\u00a0 Instead, in some cases they seem to have the opposite effect.\u00a0 Maybe the classes need to be broken down a bit.\u00a0 Perhaps the introductory class can take a slower pace and focus on core skills over the 3 days.\u00a0 Then, more complex skills can be taught in an intermediate class over another 3 days.\u00a0 (The current advanced classes offered by VARs would likely remain the same.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Based on my recent unscientific research, SolidWorks seems like it is an easy application to learn.\u00a0 In one poll, I asked for preference of educational choices for new employees not familiar with SolidWorks.\u00a0 A second poll asked how current users actually learned SolidWorks.\u00a0 The results are a little surprizing.
