{"id":112,"date":"2008-09-18T05:18:49","date_gmt":"2008-09-18T13:18:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=112"},"modified":"2008-09-14T07:27:42","modified_gmt":"2008-09-14T15:27:42","slug":"backwards-compatibility-discussion-with-sw-dev-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=112","title":{"rendered":"Backwards compatibility discussion with SW Dev Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One thing that seems to come up constantly is the desire to have some sort of backwards compatibility between releases of SolidWorks.\u00c2\u00a0 It is mentioned on the various SolidWorks forum message boards at least once month (and sometimes almost daily).\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Why does\u00c2\u00a0SolidWorks\u00c2\u00a0not provide for backwards compatibility.\u00c2\u00a0 Well, the cynic will tell you that it is intentional, as part of the overall SolidWorks Corp business model.\u00c2\u00a0 Others will say that it is due to new features and tools being added to each release which will not be supported by previous releases.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, I cannot speak to reasons relating to business model.\u00c2\u00a0 I can say that\u00c2\u00a0the SolidWorks development team, some of which attended the T-VSWUG Sept 10th meeting,\u00c2\u00a0seem genuinely interested in users&#8217; desires and\u00c2\u00a0ideas regarding backwards compatibility.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One suggestion at the meeting was to provide a way to\u00c2\u00a0simply save models for older releases.\u00c2\u00a0 The problem here is that once an unsupported feature is reached in the FeatureManager, it and all subsequent features would have to be dumb anyway.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 On the other hand, the advantage is that as least some of the information in the model would useful.<\/p>\n<p>Another suggest that had been on my mind was actually proposed by the SW development team; open, edit\u00c2\u00a0and create files native to their release level\u00c2\u00a0within a single session of SolidWorks.\u00c2\u00a0 Features and functions not supported by the release level of a particular\u00c2\u00a0model would either be grayed out or (when selected) display an error message stating that it is not compatible with the release level of the active document.<\/p>\n<p>You know what?\u00c2\u00a0 I like this approach best.\u00c2\u00a0 I can image there are some technical issues which will need to be over come.\u00c2\u00a0 For example, how will SolidWorks handle assemblies with mixed release levels?\u00c2\u00a0 Regardless, it seems the SW development team is on top of this issue.\u00c2\u00a0 Hopefully, a working solution to this issue will be available sometime soon (2 years?).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One thing that seems to come up constantly is the desire to have some sort of backwards compatibility between releases of SolidWorks.\u00c2\u00a0 It is mentioned on the various SolidWorks forum message boards at least once month (and sometimes almost daily).\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Why does\u00c2\u00a0SolidWorks\u00c2\u00a0not provide for backwards compatibility.\u00c2\u00a0 Well, the cynic will tell you that it is intentional, &hellip;
