Spelling Check can be fairly useful when proofreading a drawing.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not extremely powerful, but it is as functional as one might expect from a manually initiated <em><strong>spell checker<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 For those who didn&#8217;t even know that SolidWorks has a spell checker, it&#8217;s available under <em>Tools<\/em> pulldown&gt;<em>Spelling&#8230;<\/em>.\u00a0 (I don&#8217;t know the\u00a0SW version where it was introduced.)\u00a0 To improve its usefulness, it may be a good idea to add more words to your Spelling Check dictionary file(s).\u00a0 There&#8217;s several main ways to add words to the Spelling Check.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Method 1<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">The most obvious method is to add your new word to an annotation note in a drawing, then run Spelling Check.\u00a0 When it identifies your new word as a misspelling, simply click the <em>Add<\/em> button (this isn&#8217;t the most efficient way to add multiple words).\u00a0 This method will add words to your <em>swdictionary.dic <\/em>file located in the SolidWorks folder under C:\\&#8230;\\lang\\english.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Method 2<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">If you wish to update the Spelling Check with a bit more control (adding and deleting words), start the Spelling Check and choose the <em>More Options&#8230;<\/em> button.\u00a0 On the <em>Spelling Options<\/em> window, choose <em>Dictionaries <\/em>button.\u00a0 Stay with me, there&#8217;s more.\u00a0 Highlight &#8220;swengineering&#8221; then choose the <em>Edit <\/em>button.\u00a0 Finally!\u00a0 OK, now that you&#8217;ve made it here, add and delete words one at a time as you please.\u00a0 This method will edit your <em>swengineering.dic<\/em> file (same location as the <em>swdictionary.dic<\/em> file).\u00a0 Funny thing is that even though you are editing the <em>swengineering.dic<\/em>\u00a0file with hundreds of words, you cannot delete any already existing words.\u00a0 You can only delete the words you add to it.\u00a0 It is also funny that this method edits the\u00c2\u00a0<em>swengineering.dic<\/em> file, while the main screen of the Spelling Check edits\u00c2\u00a0the <em>swdictionary.dic <\/em>file.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Hmmm&#8230;hey SolidWorks Corp, why <em>are<\/em> there two different dictionary\u00a0files?<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Method 3<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">In my opinion, the easiest way to add words to Spelling Check in\u00a0bulk is by\u00a0editing your <em>swdictionary.dic <\/em>file directly with Notepad.\u00a0 With the file open, add one new word per line.\u00a0 Use all capital letters.\u00a0 Capital letters are not a requirement.\u00a0 It will simply keep the dictionary listings\u00a0consistent within the file, especially if\u00a0other words are added later by\u00a0using\u00a0the Spelling Check.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Networking<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">As with other similar types of SolidWorks resource files, the <em>swdictinoary.dic<\/em> and <em>swengineering.dic <\/em>files can be located on a network drive for standardization across an enterprize.\u00a0 Presumably, these files should\u00a0be in the same folder.\u00a0 To set the file location, goto <em>Tools <\/em>pulldown&gt;<em>Options&#8230;<\/em>&gt;<em>File Locations<\/em> and select <em>Spelling Folder<\/em>.\u00a0 New dictionary files can also be added within Spelling Check&#8217;s <em>Dictionary<\/em> window.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Enhancement Request<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">One function I would like to see added to the Spelling Check is the ability to add to automatic replacements for common misspellings of user words that are added to the dictionary files.\u00a0 For example, if I add the word <em>Loctite<\/em> and someone spells it as <em>Locktite<\/em>, SolidWorks currently doesn&#8217;t know to suggest <em>Loctite<\/em> as the correct spelling.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SolidWorks&#8217;
