SolidWorks Help file is notoriously unhelpful at times.\u00a0 It has evolved over the years to improve its usefulness.\u00a0 However, there are still many under-documented functions within the Help file or commands that are completely undocumented.\u00a0 One day in January 2011, Scott Baugh asked a sincere and innocent question in the\u00a0SolidWorks area on Eng-Tips<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Does anyone no (sic)\u00a0where I can find a document with hidden SW commands. There are some key strokes and commands in SW that are not always listed in the help, or if they are they are overlooked very easy (sic).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

From there, a long thread of comments grew.\u00a0 Someone mentioned that users can print out a list of keystroke assignments.\u00a0 This isn’t what Baugh was looking for.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Then, the list of “hidden SolidWorks commands” began as people submitted commands they felt were obscure or impossible to find in the SolidWorks Help file.\u00a0 It wasn’t long before Baugh offered to compile the list into a document.\u00a0 At first, the idea was to build the list in a discrete document.\u00a0 However, Deepak Gupta suggested GoogleDocs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

From there, Baugh built the list of “hidden SolidWorks commands”.\u00a0 There were three types of items added to the list:\u00a0 commands that are truly undocumented, commands that are under-documented (full functionality isn’t described), and commands that were too hard to find within the documentation.<\/p>\n

Baugh then brought the topic over to the SolidWorks Forums<\/a>, where the discussion further exploded.\u00a0 SolidWorks staff chimed in to\u00a0address several points, but also to learn.\u00a0 Jim Wilkinson<\/a>\u00a0provided several detailed responses\u00a0to help\u00a0bring clarity to the conversation.\u00a0 Through his efforts, he also discovered\u00a0several areas where improvement to the SolidWorks Help file is needed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Hidden SolidWorks Commands<\/strong> <\/a>list is now a treasure of numerous golden nuggets.\u00a0 It’s not long, yet it can take awhile to fully explore.\u00a0 Check it out.\u00a0 If you have any further suggestions, feel free to leave a comment here, or\u00a0in either the SolidWorks Forum thread or the Eng-Tips thread.<\/p>\n
