Jeff Levy gave an interesting set of hands-on presentations about Google’s Sketchup<\/a> tool at the 52nd Annual Technical and Educational Conference<\/a>. \u00a0Of course, Sketchup is a free 3D modelling application that uses\u00a0mesh faces\u00a0for the conceptual stages of design and graphic arts. \u00a0It seems to be most useful for\u00a0architectural\u00a0and civil engineering fields. \u00a0It also has functionality for mechanical engineering, such as simple physics simulation and animation (with plugins). \u00a0Some examples of this may be found on Youtube<\/a>. \u00a0 Sketchup Pro is a paid version that has some additional tools, such as Sandbox which allows the user to create natural looking topography.<\/p>\n

Levy claims that companies are investing millions of dollars to develop Sketchup plugins. \u00a0The Google Sketchup community “has a plethora of models in the 3D warehouse”. \u00a0Models of real buildings may be added to Google Earth. \u00a0There is also 3D rendering available that has output which is almost like photography.<\/p>\n

Levy advises to apply layers to elements within Sketchup. \u00a0Apply useful names to those layers. \u00a0Layers work differently in Sketchup than other applications as they don’t control visual properties.<\/p>\n

Levy stated that his architectural\u00a0students are asked two questions when they interview for jobs.<\/p>\n

As with any 3D modelling application, users must learn the best workflows to get desired results. \u00a0Levy warns, “you get into trouble if you think like you build,” particularly when applying materials to\u00a0elements that will be\u00a0replicated within the model.<\/p>\n

One area of difficulty with Sketchup is selection. \u00a0The selection window doesn’t have a field of depth. \u00a0Levy advices user to be careful in how they select elements, as\u00a0unintended changes may occur.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
