XP instructions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SolidWorks installation may request permission to install the Windows Desktop Search.\u00a0\u00a0 My advice is to decline this! \u00a0 It is not needed on any workstations. \u00a0It <a title=\"Read this article and comments\" href=\"http:\/\/www.maximumpc.com\/article\/send_windows_desktop_search_packing_now\" target=\"_blank\">potentially degrades performance of even the most pimped-out PC<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0The reason is that it is always busy updating its index.\u00a0 It is recommended by some that the Windows Desktop Search only be installed on servers.<\/p>\n<p>If it is already installed via SolidWorks or even via one of Windows automatic updates on your workstation PC, you&#8217;ll have to jump through hoops just to get to a point where you might be able to kinda remove it. \u00a0 It&#8217;s like a legal virus. \u00a0 Once its on your PC, you&#8217;ll be engaged in a lengthy battle to remove it. \u00a0 I&#8217;m not exaggerating when I say it can take days. This is because in many situations even if you &#8220;uninstall&#8221; it using <em>Add and Remove Programs<\/em>, it stays on your system. \u00a0 To truly get it off requires <a title=\"Risky hacks\" href=\"http:\/\/www.crystalidea.com\/uninstall-windows-desktop-search-manually\" target=\"_blank\">some ugly hacks<\/a> that should only be attempted by experienced PC users.<\/p>\n<p>If it is accidentally installed on a workstation PC, there is hope. \u00a0 It can generally be successfully ignored with a couple of easy steps. \u00a0 Within SolidWorks, goto Tools pulldown&gt;Options&#8230;&gt;System Options tab&gt; and under the Search heading, find the Indexing performance area. \u00a0 Make sure &#8220;Index only when computer is idle&#8221; is selected and choose OK. \u00a0 One other area that might help is also under System Options tab&gt; under the File Locations heading. \u00a0 Choose &#8220;Search Paths&#8221; from the &#8220;Show folders for:&#8221; field. \u00a0 In the &#8220;Folders:&#8221; field, only add folders of note (removing any extra folders that do not need to be indexed).<\/p>\n<p>These steps may not help other programs such as Windows Explorer, but it should help SolidWorks performance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SolidWorks installation may request permission to install the Windows Desktop Search.\u00a0\u00a0 My advice is to decline this! \u00a0 It is not needed on any workstations. \u00a0It potentially degrades performance of even the most pimped-out PC.\u00a0\u00a0The reason is that it is always busy updating its index.\u00a0 It is recommended by some that the Windows Desktop Search &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=284\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<span class=\"screen-reader-text\"> &#8220;Windows Desktop Search (what to do?)
