added in SolidWorks 2012.\u00a0 Just as a matter of a reminder, I am an employee of Dassault Systemes.\u00a0 However, what I&#8217;m doing here is talking about\u00a0improvements that interest me.\u00a0 User Interface isn&#8217;t the most exciting topic to start with.\u00a0 However, these are good improvements (a couple of which are a long time coming).<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Recent Documents<\/h4>\n<p>In a recent release, Recent Documents window (accessed via <em>File<\/em> pulldown menu&gt;<em>Browse Recent Documents&#8230; <\/em>or by pressing the letter <em>R<\/em> on out-of-the-box installs) was drastically improved with a more accessible interface.\u00a0 <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2953\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Recent Docs pin\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/recentpin.jpg?resize=300%2C203\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/recentpin.jpg?resize=300%2C203&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/recentpin.jpg?w=370&amp;ssl=1 370w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>There&#8217;s been several minor improvements in SolidWorks 2012.\u00a0 The one that impressed me the most is the addition of a pin that allows you to pin a document onto the Recent Documents window.\u00a0\u00a0 No matter how many other documents come and go, your pinned document will remain on the Recent Documents list until you unpin it.\u00a0 No matter where you originally pin your document in Recent Documents window, pinned documents automatically reposition themselves to the top-most\/left-most available position to allow for best discoverability.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2960 alignleft\" title=\"Recent document list pin in File pulldown menu\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/pinrecent.jpg?resize=210%2C101\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"101\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the pin function is also available on the list of recent documents in the <em>File<\/em> pulldown menu itself.\u00a0 Pinned documents here are the same as in the Recent Documents window.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0<\/h4>\n<h4>Search Commands<\/h4>\n<p>Search Commands is a new tool that allows you to nearly instantly type in the name of a command in order to find and run it.\u00a0 The concept is kind of a throwback to the old days with command line driven CAD.\u00a0 However, the implementation in SolidWorks provides\u00a0helpful results that navigate through the CommandManager as choose your command.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Search Commands\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/command2.jpg?resize=280%2C74\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"74\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Search Commands may be activated in a number of ways, but the quickest out-of-the-box method is the S-Key.\u00a0\u00a0Yup, the S-Key has just been made more powerful with the added function of activating Search Commands tool.\u00a0 S-Key still brings up the Shortcut bar.\u00a0 The difference is that now you can just start typing the name of the command for which you are searching.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, you can assign shortcuts to\u00a0Search Commands so that tools can now be run with a series of keystrokes instead of being limited to single keystrokes or CTRL\/SHIFT\/ALT combinations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/customizecommand.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2964 aligncenter\" title=\"Customize command shortcuts\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/customizecommand.jpg?resize=394%2C152\" alt=\"\" width=\"394\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Spanning and Fitting to Displays (real multiple monitor support is finally here!)<\/h4>\n<p>You can now control how SolidWorks displays itself and individual documents across multiple monitors in a useful manner.\u00a0\u00a0 The new span option works with single monitors just as well too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/spanitmore.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2969\" title=\"Monitor spanning options\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/spanitmore.jpg?resize=270%2C100\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">With\u00a0two monitors,\u00a0this option knows how to place two documents so that each on fills one of the two screens.\u00a0 It even knows how to handle two monitors of difference sizes and resolutions where the SolidWorks window may not fill both equally.\u00a0 Spanning Displays is\u00a0a\u00a0big\u00a0useability improvement for those of us that frequently need more than one document open.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"dspan\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/dspan1.jpg?resize=400%2C40\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"40\" I authored several custom functions, one of which was published in the March 1997 issue of Cadalyst Magazine. Since 1998, I've been used SolidWorks non-stop. I've worked to utilize the SolidWorks' user environment to simplify drafting and design activities for 20+ engineers. I've created this website to provide current information about SolidWorks from a variety of contributors.
