inspection symbols added to SolidWorks 2012 symbol library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An unofficial standard has crept into the Drafting field for mechanical drawings.\u00a0 In an effort to leverage drawings for functions other than defining the specifications for product, many companies are placing Quality\u00a0Inspection (also known by other names such as Incoming Inspection) instructions\u00a0on their drawings.\u00a0 One common method to identify inspection dimensions is to place a &#8220;race track&#8221; symbol around them.\u00a0 This is essentially a border with rounded ends.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3067\" title=\"Race track inspection symbol\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/12-8-2011-7-17-56-PM.png?resize=262%2C70\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"70\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When I last checked,\u00a0neither ASME or ISO standards currently support the race track inspection symbol.\u00a0 This means use of the symbol technically has no meaning unless the drawing has the definition somehow included within it.\u00a0 This can either be in the form of a reference to a company&#8217;s drafting standard or a note within each drawing&#8217;s general notes.<\/p>\n<p>If a company chooses to define the symbol in the general notes, they are left with an interesting problem.\u00a0 How\u00a0do they\u00a0describe the symbol so that they can define it. \u00a0Although the race track may be easily placed on a dimension in most CAD applications, it is not so easily placed in annotation notes.\u00a0 They\u00a0could use a verbose method.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Race track note\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/12-8-2011-7-50-13-PM.png?resize=404%2C48\" alt=\"\" width=\"404\" height=\"48\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The problem with this?\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t necessarily get the message across.\u00a0 What&#8217;s a race track border?\u00a0 Maybe they could say &#8220;&#8230;DENOTED BY ROUNDED OUTLINE&#8221; or &#8220;&#8230;DENOTED BY OVAL.&#8221;\u00a0 The general problem is the same with any of these options.\u00a0 The description doesn&#8217;t fully communicate what is being defined.<\/p>\n<p>SolidWorks does have a few\u00a0methods to include a faked symbol\u00a0in general notes (such as a border around empty spaces, or a sketch block placed under the note).\u00a0\u00a0Now, here&#8217;s something you won&#8217;t see in the SolidWorks 2012 What&#8217;s New document.\u00a0 With\u00a0SolidWorks 2012, there is a new heading in Symbol Library called <em>Inspection Symbols<\/em>.\u00a0 Depending on company preferences, there are two new symbols that may be included with an annotation note.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Race Track defined II\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/12-8-2011-8-03-32-PM.png?resize=358%2C33\" alt=\"\" width=\"358\" height=\"33\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3071\" title=\"Race track defined\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/12-8-2011-7-58-25-PM.png?resize=356%2C36\" alt=\"\" width=\"356\" height=\"36\"
