{"id":3464,"date":"2012-07-23T07:54:51","date_gmt":"2012-07-23T11:54:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=3464"},"modified":"2019-12-15T11:22:06","modified_gmt":"2019-12-15T15:22:06","slug":"how-to-add-a-geometric-tolerance-frame-to-your-sheet-format","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/?p=3464","title":{"rendered":"How to add a Geometric Tolerance frame to your Sheet Format"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">**OUTDATED Content: <em>Update&#8211;&gt;<\/em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">SOLIDWORKS 2020<\/span> now allows you to add <a href=\"http:\/\/help.solidworks.com\/2020\/English\/WhatsNew\/c_drawings_symbols_sheet_formats.htm?id=5f6300da4a4a4a52aa8a2c76f948f577#Pg0\">Geometric Tolerance and Surface Finish symbols onto your Sheet Formats directly<\/a> without the following workaround**<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SolidWorks Sheet Formats do not support Geometric Tolerance frames.\u00a0 So, what can be done if you wish to\u00a0display a frame with your Sheet Format on drawings?<\/p>\n<p>First, a quick review.\u00a0 SolidWorks has two separate files that serve as the starting point for creating new drawings.\u00a0 The primary file is the Drawing Template (*.slddot).\u00a0 Every time you start a new drawing, it must be from an existing Drawing Template.\u00a0 The template contains all the settings and other information needed for every drawing.\u00a0 In particular, it uses information from a Sheet Format (*.slddrt) for the border and\u00a0title block.\u00a0 Each time you create a new sheet on your drawing, the Sheet Format is directly loaded.\u00a0 However, neither the Sheet Format or the Drawing Template automatically update existing drawings.\u00a0 For more information on Sheet Formats and Drawing Templates, see <a title=\"SolidWorks Help\" href=\"http:\/\/help.solidworks.com\/2012\/english\/SolidWorks\/SWHelp_List.html?id=185ae1db35c64590b14f14df18ffabfd#Pg0\">SolidWorks Help<\/a>.\u00a0 The tip found in this article is for more advanced users and CAD Administrators that are already familiar with these topics.<\/p>\n<p>Back to the story.\u00a0 Perhaps your company is moving towards using the model to define your product, but still uses the drawing to established specifications, such as tolerances, general notes, process control dimensions, etc.\u00a0 Common practice for this scenario is to establish a generic Profile specification on the drawing that is then applied to the model.\u00a0\u00a0 But, you cannot store a Geometric Tolerance frame within a Sheet Format.\u00a0 You won&#8217;t likely want to draw your frame using sketches.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3469\" title=\"GD&amp;T Profile using ALL OVER modifier to apply tolerance to entire model\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/7-19-2012-5-15-15-PM.jpg?resize=316%2C120\" alt=\"\" width=\"316\" height=\"120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/7-19-2012-5-15-15-PM.jpg?w=316&amp;ssl=1 316w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/7-19-2012-5-15-15-PM.jpg?resize=300%2C113&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 316px) 85vw, 316px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Solution?\u00a0You can have a Sheet Format display a Geometric Tolerance frame\u00a0that is present on a Drawing Template!\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 First, make backup copies of your Sheet Formats and Drawing Templates!\u00a0 OK, once that is done, open your Drawing Template using <em>File&gt;Open<\/em> dialog set to <em>Template (*.prtdot; *.asmdot; *.drwdot)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3466\" title=\"Drawing Template\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/7-19-2012-5-02-17-PM.jpg?resize=300%2C231\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/7-19-2012-5-02-17-PM.jpg?resize=300%2C231&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fcsuper.com\/swblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/7-19-2012-5-02-17-PM.jpg?w=986&amp;ssl=1 986w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. Select the new note.<\/p>\n<p>7. Press CTRL-X.\u00a0 The note should disappear, as it is being cut from the Drawing Template.<\/p>\n<p>8.
